Hello everyone! I'm thrilled to make my debut in the 93rd squadron! Last night, I successfully completed my pilot check ride, and to my delight, I've been welcomed as one of the three newest members of this exceptional group. I'm eager to contribute my passion and expertise to our collective success. It's a fortuitous twist of fate that I stumbled upon ED's announcement about the 303rd, just when I was searching for a squadron that shares my interest in flying virtual vipers employing realistic tactics.

My interest in flight simulation dates back to the '90s when I first dipped my toes into Falcon 3.0 on a friend's trusty 486 computer. Though life's demands temporarily grounded my flight simming in the early 2000s due to career and growing family, it came back life in 2018 when I discovered the immersive world of VR and DCS. It was a revelation! Im an inactive member of the DCS 362nd FS, a WWII-focused group specializing in the P51 Mustang. The camaraderie, training, and team tactics of the 362nd were awe-inspiring and made my time there truly enjoyable. However, as time passed, activity within the squadron dwindled, especially after the closure of the Storm of War server. Consequently, I joined forces with a small unincorporated group of enthusiasts to sharpen my skills with the Viper. Inspired by events like https://dcsredflag.com/, we've been steadily adding realism to our operations. Still, we were hesitant to create a new squadron, knowing the tremendous effort it entails. So when the 303rd announcement came along, I leaped at the opportunity. A shout-out to Pappy Pappy, one of my regular wingmen, who's gearing up for his interview later this week. Best of luck, Pappy!

A bit about me: I call Omaha, Nebraska, my home, where I work in Information Technology, focusing on AWS (Amazon's cloud). Approaching 50, I'm a proud husband and father of four adult children. My journey in aviation includes service in the USAF as an F16 electrical and environmental systems specialist, stationed at Misawa, Japan (14 FS), and Hill AFB (421 FS). After my active service, I continued as a reservist in the 419 FS at Hill AFB. An unforgettable highlight was a TDY to Eglin AFB, where I scored an incentive ride in a Viper, experiencing the full spectrum of its capabilities, from Mach 1.1 to 9.4Gs—truly awesome! I'm also an instrument-rated private pilot with over 1200 hours of flight time, primarily in a Bonanza A36, which I reluctantly parted with a decade ago. During my ownership of the Bonanza, I reveled in the joy of formation flying with a group of like-minded enthusiasts that regularly few Bos in formation, an experience that I'll always cherish. Though my real-life flights have become sporadic these days, my passion for flying remains unwavering.

edit - I forgot to mention that I am a motorcycle nut. I love it all - offroad, adventure and long distance cruising. Including that in case anyone else shares that hobby.

I'm eagerly looking forward to taking to the virtual skies with all of you, and I can't wait to share our flying adventures together. Here's to exciting missions and camaraderie among the clouds! Cheers!

You scored a F16 incentive ride while AMXS? You lucky son of a gun :p

Yeah also coming from the father of 4 background, that is the beauty of what we have these days in technology and DCS. Although with its gripes, it still provides us an excellent way to re-live some of our flightline memories and keep aviation enthusiasm alive. Been a great hobby and way to connect with other like-minded individuals such as yourself. If I could do it all over again, I would be seeking the PPL... but at this point with 2 babies under 2, and 2 teenagers... life has played its toll on the overall big picture. Maybe the opportunity will present itself again down the road once the family dust settles a bit!

Sounds like big-blue gave you one heck of a ride out there, especially serving the 14 FS in Japan. How long were you in for?

Eager to getting airborne and diving deep into the Viper with you! Good times ahead!

I was active for 4 years. I spent 0.5 yrs in tech school, 2.5 yrs in Japan, and 1.0 yr at Hill (well, much of that was in Saudi). Japan was pretty cool. We started out with Block 30s and while I was there transitioned to brand new Block 50s. It was a huge step up in capabilities.

My ride came stationed at Hill (which was flying Block 40s att). As an E4 I was given 7-level authority (for non maintenance ppl, 7-levels can sign off other people's work to make the jet mission ready, this usually an E-5 or higher thing). While on TDY at Eglin, on our last few days there, one of our jets broke and required an engine swap. The engine had to be shipped from Hill, which was going to take a couple weeks. Since I was a 7-level and able sign off my own work, I volunteered to stay behind so that the other guys could go home to their families, we had been gone almost constantly that year, and I was single att. The command then surprised me with that incentive ride as a thank you I guess. I'll never forget it.. Happy to tell the story to anyone who will listen.

The PPL was a life long dream. I made a deal with my wife that I would wait until our youngest was 5 years old before I started. The day after, I started on a sport pilot license, thinking I would just fly Kitfox type planes. I then bought into a 1941 Piper J5 cub which is a 3 seater - 3 seats required a PPL, so I went back to flight school. Not long after I started traveling a LOT for work and motorcycle racing. I joined a local flight club and got my instrument rating in C182 and Piper Arrow. Then, as luck would have it, I got promoted at my job, which required even more travel. And by a small miracle, they had a general aviation travel policy, which allowed us to get reimbursed flying our own airplane as long as it was cheaper/better than commercial. I covered the midwest a lot, and could hit 3 or 4 cities per day in a GA plane and only 1/4 that commercially or in a car. So I bought the Bonanza, and flew my ass off for many years. When my job changed and I didnt need to travel as much, I sold the Bo.

Wing Wing thank you for organizing all this. I can tell that your home life is a bit "damp" right now and I salute you for keeping all these plates spinning. An in-tact family with happy healthy kids is about the best thing a person can hope for in life, so keep your focus where it belongs, we'll be here when you can come up for air. I look forward to flying with you as well.

Spectacular! I worked my way through college at Hill as a civilian in depot. Most of that time was putting GPS/datalink in C130s and older F16s. Working on the Hurc is a whole different animal than modern stuff (I much prefer fighters). Specially because the TO system is so much better now (in 90s) than it was in the 50 and 60s I guess. Thanks for your service!

I've been civil service at Robins since 1999 and visited Hill multiple times. A good friend of mine was active duty there until 3 or 4 years ago.
